4 Kitchen designs to take into account if you have children
Your kitchen is the hub of your home, so it’s important it’s safe and functional for every member of your family.
Whether you have a baby on the way, or you are looking after your grandchildren, childproofing the kitchen is essential. Kitchens can be dangerous environments, especially for young children, with hard surfaces, pointed corners, sharp edges, both hot and cold areas, plus all the knives, pots and breakables. It is a hazardous area, to help prevent any accidents we’ve compiled our top tips for designing a child-friendly kitchen.
Rounded corners
Choosing your cabinetry and worktops is one of the most exciting parts of designing your kitchen, with tons of style, materials and finishes available, including child-friendly curves and rounded corners. Not only can worktops be shaped to have rounded corners, you can also add rounded cupboards for a sleep and stylish look - with no bumped heads!
Hygienic worktops
Kitchen worktops are prone to attracting germs and bacteria. To keep your children safe choose a worktop material that is non-porous and easy to clean such as quartz or granite. There are even laminate worktops available on the market that have an added treatment to make them more hygenic. Steer clear from wood which is extremely porous and retains moisture, humidity...and germs!
Low countertops
Consider including a lower section of countertop at a child-friendly height. By having a kitchen surface well within their reach, children can safely get involved with the cooking and baking without stretching or standing on furniture, which creates a hazard within itself!
Child friendly storage
Keep dangerous items out of reach by adding locks to drawers and cabinets. There are many available that can be retrofitted to your existing cabinetry and removed when your children are old enough to understand hazards. We’d be happy to recommend some of our favourite designs when creating your dream kitchen.
